ANYONE FANCY TAKING UP UMPIRING

Over the past few seasons the South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League has promoted the concept of club umpires, and those clubs who have not nominated an umpire have faced a fine.

At Whitley we have not had a named club umpire, for no one has volunteered and we believe that if people don’t volunteer they cannot be forced into umpiring. So we have happily paid this fine.

However, with the merger between the SYSCL and the South Yorkshire Alliance, the need for more umpires has become a priority, one that is all the more urgent considering the SYSCL will be losing several umpires at the end of next season and needs around 20 more to be fully manned.

Bear in mind also that even more umpires will be required as a consequence of the increased number of matches being played every weekend.

To counteract this the League is exploring several options. These include an extra levy or a points deduction for clubs that do not have an umpire to place in the system, or the alternative of bonus points for clubs that do boast a named umpire.

So you can see the problem. And we ask: is there anyone out there who would like to try to fill the bill at Whitley? A former player, perhaps, or one approaching retirement; or a youngster who feels he might make a better umpire than a player?

All training course fees would be covered by the club, plus the annual membership fee.

As we have already stressed, we are not looking to force anyone to take up umpiring, but should anyone fancy donning the white coat (and be paid and fed for doing the job!), can they please get in touch with either Steve Fletcher or Kevin Brown.
